A few months back, I blogged that your website speed was due to be a ranking factor, well now it is. Google have released an update which now factors the page load speed as a ranking factor.

This is a positive step as it does reward those sites that are using efficient methods of delivery content, but it does seem to edge us ever closer to ensuring that every possible end user scenario is met. While delivering a zippy load time is an obvious plus for both web-masters and visitors, there are many scenarios which are outside our control, e.g. poor network connectivity and the visitors personal setup.

I'm guessing that it'll find some kind of meniscus level anyway (Jays, prolly the Leaving Cert since I used the word meniscus). It might make most people consider the busy-ness of their site but the fastest won't necessarily be the most sought. No harm overall if it smartens up the act for end users.

Well the basic Google aim is to get you off their webpage as fast as possible. If you return to Google, it's because the link you clicked didn't do it for you – be it irrelevant content, too slow etc.

So I'd say this as a fair indication that it may be an important factor in future. Right now it makes sense to have a fast loading website to improve the user experience.
