Clever E-Store Marketing from Book Depository

Book Depository, one of the best book websites around had a bit of downtime earlier today. Not content with throwing a notice up on the shop door, they’ve done something really clever.

This morning their website was down for some maintenance, but they explain all that and offer customers a discount when the store is back up.

Clever on two fronts:

  • Great customer relations & PR
  • Make up for lost sales with voucher redemption

With web only stores, it’s not always possible to do maintenance during off peak hours. What’s really clever about this is they can crunch the stats on voucher redemption vs lost business to determine the impact of having the store down.

The voucher is valid up until end of tomorrow, to further control and analyse their sales as a result of the downtime. Brilliant.

Excellent idea, it’s hardly perfect as some folk could be planning to order from a library or similar location and not have net access the next day, but good all the same.
